Toshiba today announced the commercialization of new high-capacity hard drives for the general public, the first operating at 7200 rev / min, which should increase competition and lead to lower prices.
Toshiba, the third and last group on the HDD market, finally broke the monopoly of the segment Western Digital hard drives 5TB for individuals. HGST, a subsidiary of the latter, and Seagate does indeed offer the capacity of 5TB or more on the corporate market.
The Device Division of storage of is launching new products on the MD series, that is to say, the internal hard drives Serial ATA 3.5-inch marketed to individuals. They are only offered in 4 and 5 TB, while WD offers WD Green and WD Red Desktop until 6 TB. But unlike the latter, which capped at 5400 or 5900 rev / min, the Toshiba MD Series work at 7200 rev / min. They should therefore be significantly more efficient; both in terms of transfer rate of access time, and agree to the installation of an operating system.
4TB model meets the PX3009E-1HP0 reference to that of 5TB PX3010E-1HQ0. They exploit Perpendicular Magnetic Recording (PMR) technology and Tunnel Magneto Resistive (TMR) conventional, a Serial ATA 6 GB / s and they board 128 MB buffer.
Hard drives Toshiba MD Series 4 and 5 TB will go on sale in Europe in March to their respective procurement price of 200 and 230 euros. In comparison, WD Green same capabilities, but at 5400 rev / min, are sold around 160 and 200 euros.
