Presented last month at CES 2015, the new generation of miniature PC Intel debuts. The LDLC distributor opened for sale last Wednesday the first two references: the NUC5i3RYK and NUC5i3RYH.
They are built around a Core i3 processor 5th generation, that is to say, the new microarchitecture Broadwell, launched at CES, bringing the etching process from 22 to 14 nm and in particular provide better energy efficiency. This is specifically a Core i3-5010U, the second of the range, a chip with two cores with Hyper-Threading clocked at 2.1 GHz and Intel HD Graphics 5500 GPU clocked from 300 to 900 MHz for a TDP of 15 W. the versions with Core i5 and Core i7 processors are expected in the second stage, from April.
Like the Intel HD Graphics 6000 of these future models, GPU has the advantage of supporting the decoding of HEVC and VP9, codecs Ultra HD era, as well as display until Ultra HD 4K. Unfortunately this first NUC Broadwell has two mini DisplayPort 1.2 outputs, but no HDMI output. It should therefore use a DisplayPort to HDMI converter into a dedicated multimedia PC, HTPC.
Computers to complete yourself
Like its predecessors, the NUC is a computer to complete yourself. The NUC5i3RYK has two SODIMM slots for up to 16GB of RAM DDR3L memory and a slot for SSD M.2 (instead of an mSATA slot previously). The NUC5i3RYH can additionally accommodate a hard drive or SSD Serial ATA 3 2.5-inch format.
In terms of connectivity, the two references have a second M.2 card slot Wi-Fi or Bluetooth controller, the antennas being pre-installed, a Gigabit Ethernet port, 4 USB 3.0 ports, 4 USB 2.0 internal and above two mini DisplayPort outputs. Compared to previous generations, the new finally brings support for two serial ports, for industrial uses, but especially a removable top cover, opening the way for the design of expansion modules such as DTT tuners or NFC receptors.
Intel NUC NUC5i3RYK and NUC5i3RYH without and with 2.5 inch housing are available now for 300 and 320 euros respectively. With 4GB of RAM and a 120GB SSD, we must count from 430 to 450 euros from the same dealer, excluding Windows license.
