Samsung Portable SSD T1 - review

It is hard not to wonder how fast technology advances. And if you find yourself faced with a tech gadget that exudes from all sides, even more. The Samsung Portable SSD T1 is an external disk SSD format with the size of a business card, and a feather weight of just 30 grams. But make no mistake with this letter, because inside we can find up to 1TB of space and transfer rates up to 540 MB / s through a USB 3.0 port. An excellent travel companion that can find in the market for a price of 280 euros for the 500GB version, which is what we could prove in depth. We tell our impressions of this tablet that threatens to revolutionize the storage market.

A design to rule them all

The Samsung Portable SSD T1 grabs you and conquest from the first moment, since you take it out of the box. The wrapper camouflages the striking design of this gadget. And not because it’s ugly, but both its size and its weight left the false impression that we are in an external drive to use. Nothing is further from reality. Samsung Portable SSD T1 has the size of a pocket flask. Fits comfortably in the palm and is so light that looks like a toy. The Korean company has opted for an elegant look in black with a grid pattern in the main part of the disk and a small strip of glossy black on both sides. The brand logo is carved in silver-gray and it just stands above the rest. Overall, I must say that this is a model with a line very balanced and a look that does not seek to boast of what lurks within. At one end we have the MicroUSB 3.0 connection that is what will connect the drive directly to a computer. By the way, we have our doubts about whether the company could introduce a USB 3.0 port full size by the fineness of the disk, another example of how compact accessory.

Specifically, the full dimensions of the Samsung Portable SSD T1 are at 71 x 53.2 x 9.2 mm and the maximum weight is 30 grams (26 grams the test drive 500 GB). For instance, a chocolate egg Kinder Surprise is heavier. And this unit is five times lighter than the iPhone 6.

This memory chip uses Samsung 3D V-NAND Technology Company that is revolutionizing the way in which the cells are positioned from a horizontal to a vertical position. The result is a more efficient, fast and the option to create tablets with greater capacity in less space (which is perfectly reflected in the Portable SSD T1) construction. The new T1 line is available in three different configurations, one in 256 GB, 500 GB and other third 1TB. A stunning breakthrough for an SSD.

Protocols and speed

Samsung Portable SSD disk T1 is compatible with the USB 3.0 high-speed protocol, a protocol that provides transfer rates up to ten times faster than USB 2.0. In addition, this model is capable of reaching transfer rates up to 450 MB / s thanks to the TurboWrite technology company. To test the performance of this model, we have carried out several tests through a laptop with a USB 3.0 port and another laptop with USB 2.0. It is not seeking evidence lab results but a way to provide a sample of the performance that can have this record in a typical environment.

The first test performed by transferring the 13.4 GB spread over 1,481 files and 145 folders. The challenge is greater for the disk as managing numerous files and folders often slow down much the performance of any disc. When using a USB 2.0 port the time it took was an average of about 6:50 minutes (we did this transfer three times). This gives a rate of about 32.6 MB / s. Now, if we change to a USB 3.0 port high speed the time it takes an average of 1:30 minutes, or 148.8 MB / s

Now, we did a second test with a single file of 11.3 GB and a USB 3.0 port, transfer both the computer and the computer to the disk. In the first case, the average time it took 53 seconds, leaving an average of 213 MB / s. When passing the file directly from the PC to the drive time was 42 seconds, or 269 MB / s.

Safety and commissioning

To start using the Samsung Portable SSD T1 first thing to do is activate the gadget through an application that comes with your computer. In this first step we are offered the option to enter a password to access the data contained in the tablet. AES 256 bit encryption ensures that data integrity will remain safe and that anyone who is not authorized can view or steal our files. Undoubtedly, a feature very useful for professionals and users who handle sensitive data. Speaking of data integrity, one of the main advantages that bring SSD format disks is that it is a kind of more reliable and lasting memory. This is because it has no moving parts to wear as with traditional hard drives. Samsung offers a three-year limited warranty with this model.

Price and Review

The Samsung Portable SSD T1 has some approximate prices of 180 euros for the 250 GB version, 280 euros for the 500 GB version and 680 euros for the 1TB version. In short, this is a great leap forward in SSDs in both design and features. Portable SSD T1 fits in the palm of the hand and its weight is below 30 grams (less than a Kinder Surprise). And all with capabilities that are closer and closer to traditional hard drives and tip speeds up to 450 MB / s.
