Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II review

Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II

The new Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II is a compact camera that stands out for having a small size offering performance that is up to professional high-end equipment. Thanks to its large CMOS sensor the Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II offers a 12.8 megapixel resolution. It also has a very bright lens f / 2 3.9 ultra-angle 24 mm with which we can capture both landscapes and portraits of people easily. Beyond the technical specifications, which has caught our attention is your folding screen 3 inches to 180 degrees with which we can selfies us very comfortably. Finally, the wide range of shooting modes will help us enhance our creativity simply by pressing a few buttons on. Then we explain our experience.

 Design

The Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II is a compact camera that is quite manageable but which, however, has a disadvantage in relation to their design, and that is, in our opinion is too heavy. It reaching 558 grams with battery and memory card included, it is more than necessary to transport it around his neck by the strap that is included in the kit, otherwise we risk slipping from our hands by not having a handle large enough to support his weight, especially by extending the zoom. However, if we use the strap, we can handle it smoothly without fear of crashing.

Like most compact cameras, the Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II has a series of buttons that are located on the right, while the button off and on, the wheel to determine the shooting mode and the shutter and zoom lever is at the top. Notably, while Canon has opted for this model without an optical viewfinder, so the size of the camera is a bit smaller. The flash has caught our attention because it is folded and placed in the upper left. It is activated by the button on the left side of the camera and deployed it does so with such force that makes us doubt the strength of your dock over time.

The screen is certainly one of the strengths of the camera is that, thanks to a studied system collapses to 180 degrees allowing us to see what we photographed from different angles. This is not only helpful to get us one selfie , but also dare to take pictures with the prospect that without a folding screen, we could not do , thereby enhancing our creativity at the time of shooting.

 Controls and Management

As we announced earlier, the controls are mostly on the right side of the camera. This is convenient because, while holding the camera by the handle, we can easily press the buttons with your thumb. We also find the button to record video as well as the “S” button , located right next to the pad intended to pose thumb when we are shooting, which will be really useful to prevent camera shake when you want to tighten record video. It also has a wheel and a crosshead in which we can quickly access the Macro mode, the flash and the ISO value. The fourth button of the cross is that in manual mode, determine if you want to change is the aperture or shutter time. These settings are configured helping the ring on the lens of the Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II, while the second ring will serve to focus manually.

At the top of the camera give a conference where we can choose the shooting mode (Custom, Manual, Program, Aperture Priority, Priority, Shutter, Program, Auto Hybrid, Automatic, Creative Shooting and Normal). ‘s button to play back images It is also found in the top of the camera , next to the button off and on, which is a little awkward because when we review the pictures we have done, it is not difficult to press the button on the side and turn the camera unintentionally . Finally, we also find in this space the zoom lever. The Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II has a 5x optical zoom which can increase up to 20x digital zoom.

One of the great advantages of this camera Canon is its 3-inch LCD screen is touch. This will help us much handling, for example, when reviewing the images we have taken, that we can pass them quickly swipe your finger across the screen, as we do on a smartphone. We can also set up the camera, pressing the “Menu” button on the right side of the device to activate the “Touch Shutter” on the camera will shoot by touching the screen. This may be convenient in some situations but not all. And, as we said above, this camera is very heavy and if you shoot by tapping the screen, will dispense with that hand to hold, so you run the risk that we slip and we fall to the ground.

 Shooting Modes

Undoubtedly, one of the advantages of the camera Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II is the large number of shooting modes is there and the quality they offer. Thanks to the great variety that makes available the Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II we can apply retouching that suits to each photo or even try several tweaks in the same picture. You only have to select the wheel in the Creative Shooting mode, the SCN Mode or Creative Filters Mode. All are located just behind the Auto mode and each has a variety of tweaks. To select the one that suits us and once we have the selected mode, we have to move the first ring which is located on the camera lens and go past the filters until we choose the one that suits us.

In Shooting Mode Creative, we can take a picture and the camera will automatically take six different in that the first may take it in automatic mode and the following five different colors (purple, green, blue and sepia) and with different zooms. All of them they are saved in the memory of the camera and we can view them as six different photos so stay with the one we like.

The Creative Filters mode is the most original. In it we find the filter “High Dynamic Range”, also known as HDR. Once selected, the camera will take three pictures an overexposed, one underexposed balanced and the last, and then process and take out a single in which all areas of photography out well exposed and colors, slightly saturated . The results of this filter are very good, especially for a landscape or still objects , however, if we want to photograph people not serve us because, by taking three pictures, the camera captures the slightest movement can be exited moved or a pesky black spots. Another creative filter you can find if you move the ring of the lens is to “Fisheye Effect”. This filter will distort the picture; however, does not do justice to its name because it does not in any way get a picture with effect “Fisheye” but simply deform the center of the photo. Thus, this filter is not advisable to use it to capture people as the deformed, however, is very good for taking pictures of buildings or signs.

It is the filter “Miniature Effect” which, in our opinion, provides the best results. This filter sharpens a certain time period. Thanks to the rings of the lens, we can tell you the size of the fringe and in the same orientation (horizontal or vertical). Everything is in the range will be perfectly focused, while what is left out, no. It is a very useful effect for general photographs that we want to highlight something specific. For example if we go up to the mountain from which you can see a river by crossing a bridge, select the latter in the focus area is very good.

For portraits the best modes offered by Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II are the “Portrait” mode , which can be found by selecting the wheel in the top right of the SCN mode then turning the ring on the lens to give him . We may also use the filter “Background Defocus” found in the Creative Filters mode. The last thing he will do is highlight by approach, which leaves in the foreground, a person such as progressively blurring, everything that is on the second and even third level.

Finally, in the SCN mode we have found particularly striking the “Stars” mode with which you can obtain quality results if we photograph the starry sky. It also features the “Star Timelapse mode “that deserves to be tested. In both modes you can see that the ISO of the Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II does not result in a grainy photo.

 Conclusions

As we can see with the evidence we have gained, the Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II offers very good image quality in all situations. Moreover, knowing how to use the wide range of shooting modes offered by this new Canon compact camera, we can not only deploy our creativity in shooting but also save us hours of tedious retouching after returning from a trip. Note that the macro mode has disappointed us, being too hard to focus on the object you want to photograph. However, to get good results within walking distance, we recommend using the manual focus on the camera and try to photograph the object as close as possible. The only major drawback we found when testing the Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II is its weight. However, it is also true that, considering the results it offers, this disadvantage is mitigated.
