The virtual reality goggles Oculus Rift become a tool for testing surgery

Oculus Rift

This weekend event was held virtual reality in Cincinnati, United States. In this show there were several units Oculus Rift for the more adventurous could get one of them for a value of 260 euros. There was also another set of virtual reality glasses for an approximate price of 7,500 euros.

Oculus Rift is not only much cheaper than the competition, but it was also much more sensitive to the formation of society. A new project to teach medical students to perform surgery through the Oculus Rift.

The students who want to see how it performs first-person hip surgery just have to get one of these helmets and look through them. In fact, if any of you has a development kit this device, you can also see it.

The project has been produced by RĂ©mi Rosseau for Moveo Foundation, a group that aims to improve the surgery through technology. The Doctor Gregory Thomas, a surgeon from the European Georges Pompidou Hospital and professor at the University of Descartes in Paris, recorded video with two GoPro cameras while performing the operation.

The video is based on putting a screen in front of your eyes with the possibility of approaching a particular point of the panel. However, compared to a video of the same operation on the computer, it is more real and makes the student less distracted. In addition, first-person shows what the surgeon sees.

Rousseau notes that medical students attending actual surgeries are more concerned to help the surgeon to learn how the operation is performed. With Oculus Rift, future doctors will be able to concentrate on the procedure and repeat the important parts.

This is the kind of action that would be a breakthrough for education because the costs are minimal. For the same price as a mid-range terminal, medical college could equip their classrooms with a few glasses of this type. So it is not surprising that many of the developers are creating applications thereof beyond the gaming industry.

In a post on Medium, Rosseau wonders if Facebook would be interested in the potential of the device as a medical device or simply devoted exclusively to the field of video games. This decision may take you some time to Marc Zuckerberg, because currently only available to developers kit. Even if not Oculus focus this aspect, you could build a platform where these advances could grow.

Meanwhile, those we do not have any medical training to use the device Oculus Rift as a virtual surgery simulator.
