Universities in the United States are known to provide great value to research. In addition to lectures, which are held by the professors, they are usually responsible for a certain research project, which they often engage with some of the interested students. Recently had a new battery technology and touch screen technology emerged from universities. The research of the Michigan State University has now produced an interesting result. The team, which is led by Richard Lunt has a transparent solar cell developed which could produce in the distant future, perhaps in the windows of homes, offices and even get in the car to use and power. Another application would be covering the display of a smartphone that would be loaded by use under the influence of light itself. But all these are still visions; the current state of the art is far from so far.
The secret behind the transparent solar cell put in the organic material, which is sandwiched between the glasses. This material may absorb those wavelengths of light that are not visible to the human eye. This refers to the wavelengths in the range from ultraviolet near infrared. They also state that the glass used distributes the light in the corners of the glass panel. There, the photovoltaic cells are placed, then turn the light power. “Since the materials do not absorb or reflect light in the visible spectrum, they seem transparent to the human eye,” said the head of research.
Disappointment still efficiency of the solar cell. Although the technology would be worth loud Lunt at houses with extremely large glass surfaces, but lay the efficiency only at 1 percent. The research team expects that one can still increase the efficiency of 5 percent, further work on the project, but then one has arrived with the latest technology at a maximum. But even if it were not the most effective way to gain energy, we see great potential in it. The areas, which are now covered with glass, are so great that even a lot of electricity could be generated. For the full coverage of an eBook reader, tablet, or smartphone, the surface of the display, however, would never be enough, so Lunt.
Whether the technology is commercialized possibly in the next few years, is unclear – especially still is completely unknown how the price of the transparent solar cells will be compared to normal solar cell.
