Sony a6000 review

The Sony a600 is a camera that falls under the category of compact mirrorless. It is a type of camera that aims to combine the quality offered an SLR interchangeable lenses in a much more compact by removing the interior pentaprism and focusing on an electronic viewfinder frame. Sony has a good collection of cameras of this type in his series Nex, now enhanced with Sony a6000. This model has a sensor 24 Megapixel powered BIONZ, system approach 25 points, recording videos in FullHD and a package of features and shooting modes very complete. We tested the Sony a6000 16-50 along with the target, which also includes optical stabilizer. We tell you our impressions.

 Design

The first thing that struck us the Sony a6000 is the good combination between compact size and ergonomics. ‘s common for smaller cameras are slightly awkward to handle because your hand is bigger than the camera. In this case we have placed a handle on the right side that is very comfortable to hold. ‘s pretty big so that we can grab for sure, but at the same time not too bulky or affect the overall size of the camera. This handle has a rubbery texture that makes securing safer. The total weight is around 450 grams if we also have the lens that came with the kit.

Sony has opted for fairly straight lines on the Sony a6000; in fact its chassis is substantially rectangular and has the controls split between the top and the back, as usual in this type of cameras. At the rear carries a three-inch screen that is hinged, so we can find the best angle when we’re shooting in a somewhat difficult position or where it is very sunny. But has the somewhat limited movements.

 Controls and operation

As mentioned, the Sony a6000 has several dials wheel type at the top of the chassis. The one furthest to the left will help us select the shooting mode quickly and the right work in different areas, for example to move through menus or choose the aperture when using manual mode. These dials are recessed into the chassis, maybe too much, but you can comfortably handle with your thumb.

If we go back to find another wheel beside the screen, with which you can select the shutter speed in manual mode, and move around the menus as we do with the upper wheel. In this case it is also a directional crosspiece. The other buttons are divided between the right side and top of the screen, except the button movie recording, which is on the right side and is a little uncomfortable to press for how small it is. Combination of buttons and dials are fairly well balanced, providing a fairly natural handling when adjusting manual settings. The screen is not touch, but we have not missed this detail.

The camera has a folding screen in the back. It has three inches, a size suitable to see the content without difficulty. However, the brightness of the screen is pretty short when we are in full sun. With reflections that make it nearly impossible to frame the picture properly. In these situations we have been forced to use the electronic viewfinder built in, which certainly offers very good resolution.

For the lens to zoom need to use a small slide that is located at the lower left. Not as comfortable as the classic zoom rings of conventional targets, but is relatively pleasant to handle. The focal length is 16-50 mm, ie, covering everything from wide angle to normal and also allows interesting macros.

 Shooting Modes

Sony has a good variety of shooting modes available, noting especially how Superior Auto. This program can be easily accessed from the upper wheel and what it does is to adapt the parameters for the type of photo you’re going to do, also reduces blur and noise. Another thing is the way Smart Auto, which is practically the same but without the extra noise reduction. These functions do not have to search through the menus, but the camera will take care of everything. The truth is that the Superior Auto mode and Intelligent Auto function very well in most situations, but if you do night photos must be taken into account that could increase too ISO speed, getting a clear picture, but with an effect of noise stark. It may also be the case that we want to achieve a particular effect, such as a very strong backlight, and thus it smooth. We recommend using it regularly, but if we get a more concrete result is better to lose a few seconds by choosing the scene we want or even shooting in manual mode.

At the top we can also dial to select aperture priority mode or shutter, program auto, mode video, sweep panorama and selection of scenes. The variety of scenes available is quite extensive and includes portrait, sports action, macro, landscape, sunset, night scene, manual twilight, night portrait and anti-movement. course I could not for other missing features like focus mode, the type of single-shot or burst, timer and the flash modes and more.

In the case of videos should be noted the SteadyShot optical stabilizer or, getting minimize our natural hand tremors. Just as taking pictures, the videos are very good quality, but if we force their chances shooting in very dark environments, the results obviously lost.

 Testing

The Sony a6000 offers very good results in almost any situation, including low-light shots as long as we adjust parameters correctly. Images are very large and crisp with a rich tonal range and a good range of light and shade without ever clipping. As mentioned earlier, only the ISO sensitivity to their highest values, we find saturated colors and the annoying effect of noise, this is normal when we are working to ISO 12800 or 25600, it is best to avoid such high sensitivities to avoid this problem.

 Conclusions

The Sony a6000 is a very versatile camera that offers the quality of more advanced equipment in a very small chassis. ‘s design because we liked being so compact is comfortable to hold and operate. Dials are also well placed, something you’ll notice especially when shooting in manual. If you come from an SLR you will not notice such a radical change as other cameras, where you have to touch buttons to adjust aperture and shutter speed. While handling the dials and buttons seems very dynamic, the screen is quite uncomfortable when we are outdoors as there are many reflections. The panel is hinged, but has fairly limited movements and the ends always have finished looking through the viewfinder, where we see the frame itself clearly.

Overall it’s a very competent camera for users looking for advanced features in a compact chassis. ‘s Sony a6000 is easy to carry in your bag and does not weigh much, but in return offers very spacious and sharp images, but yes, advise tinker with shooting modes and other options to make the most and do not always stay in the automatic modes.
