Sony A7R II - the new version gets 42MP, 4K and more

Sony has just released a new edition of their hit mirrorless camera with full-frame sensor. The new Sony A7R II is presented with a new backlit sensor, the first full frame rate (full frame) with backlight, and add to your business card stabilization system of five points that had already been released in the A7 II. Also premiering 4K video recording and a new OLED electronic viewfinder with XGA resolution and a magnification of 0.78x. It is a compact mirrorless with features and professional performance, planting decidedly ahead of the full frame industry traditions (Canon and Nikon), based on technology and design.

Few developments in the external appearance of the new A7R II, committed to continuing professional design type already released the first A7 and it is clear that it has been successful. So we have a camera with SLR-inspired appearance, but smaller. In fact, the combination of compact design with angled viewfinder reminds a little of SLR in the early eighties, but without falling into the retro trend in which other brands are. The A7R II account for with the same ergonomic grip than the rest of the A7 range and the mode switch and control exposure compensation on top. As for the rear panel, this is obviously dominated by the screen, which has an area of three inches and full HD resolution, and can be folded vertically. The LCD screen is accompanied by an electronic viewfinder with OLED technology and XGA resolution and featuring ZEISS T coating to reduce reflections and unwanted light effects. This viewfinder offers 0.78x magnification, which according to the Japanese manufacturer will becomes the viewfinder that comes closest to the dimensions you actually perceive our eyes.

One of the great innovations in the A7R II is its sensor with built-in backlight. This kind of technology has already been seen before in other cameras, but never one with a full frame sensor, as is the case at hand. Thanks to the backlight, the new A7 achieved ISO sensitivity range of 100 to 25,600, and can expand from 50 to 102,400. The sensor offers a resolution of 42.4 megapixels, and includes an anti-reflection coating also helps to get that great sensitivity range. The sensor has no less than 399 points of focus for phase detection, plus 25 points contrast detection, which results in an automatic approach 40% faster than the previous version. Another novelty introduced in the A7R II is the new trigger that produces 50% less vibration than the previous model, and has a life of about 500,000 shots. The A7R II also incorporates a silent shooting mode, to take pictures quietly without any noise or vibration.

Following the technical features, this new A7 has inherited the stabilizer five points A7 II, but suitably updated and adapted to the resolution and camera capabilities of the new version. This stabilization system acts directly on the sensor, and corrects vibration moving along five different points, including Pitch, Yaw, X and Y axes and longitudinal displacement. Sony claims the use of this or equivalent stabilization system allows a shutter speed faster 4.5, about steps. But apart from the number of axles, the fact that the stabilizer is incorporated in the camera body A7R II assumed that this system may be applied to any lens that is fitting, even hand or vintage objectives through adapters.

Finally, Sony has introduced its new 4K recording A7R II, a feature expected in a camera of this quality and claims. In this mode, the videos have a resolution of 3,840 x 2,160 pixels, and can be taken in full frame mode in a mode called Super 35mm crop. As for connectivity, the new Sony A7R II includes WiFi and NFC ports and is compatible with Sony’s PlayMemories Mobile app for Android and iOS, allowing us to quickly share with a smartphone or tablet images we have made with the camera. The new Sony A7R II reaches the European market this summer, and its retail price will be about 3,500 euros.
