In which took place in the last days Display Innovation Fair 2014 in Japan Semiconductor Energy Laboratory (SEL) has presented a foldable 8.7 inch AMOLED display, which can be folded basically a smartphone. The principle completely flexible display can be folded at two points and so folded to a more compact display in the holder. Conceivable would be the use of such displays in an 8.7-inch tablet, which can transform this without problems in a smartphone. Of course, these are so far a prototype. However, the durability should now be extremely good at the kinks.

Compared to the first foldable display of SEL with 5.9 inch large 720p display, much has happened. The display coincides with 8.7 inches of something greater, but now has a full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. In addition, the new panel now also has a touch screen and can be operated with a finger, which was not the case with the first generation. So you approach little by little the market. Another important point is of course the durability of the kinks. The capacity is there at about 100,000 buckling without damage. The radius is in the case of 2 and 4 mm – depending on the position on the display. Naturally in a fixed support only certain places would be charged on the display when one allows only a specific folding pattern.
But the foldable 8.7 inch AMOLED display of SEL uses the kink while continuing to display information, such as is the case with the Samsung Galaxy Note Edge. If the display is folded, notifications or similar can be shown there. How well can see very well in the following video, the display is still operated with gloves and very carefully. Too rapid market launch in finished products is not to be expected. Nevertheless, the technology slowly but surely developed to market maturity with higher resolutions and better durability at the kinks. Samsung Galaxy Note surprised with the edge of the sides rounded display at this year’s IFA 2014, so we are already excited to see what awaits us in the coming year.
