The curves TVs are the latest of the latest. Huge screens with a attractive shape that promise a more immersive viewing experience, like having a movie screen in the living room. Sony joined this new trend with the Sony BRAVIA S90, a TV with the most advanced systems and an interesting curved design. Available in 65 and 75 inch BRAVIA S90 is a TV that does not lack anything. 4K resolution, image processor, surrounds sound, many connections and Smart TV platform as complete. We tested the 65-inch model, we tell you our impressions.
Design
Sony has opted for a combination of straight and simple and elegant curves. The frame around the screen is quite thin up and down and is topped with two pieces of aluminum. The wings are rather wide, but is forgiven because it is where integrates its six speakers, which are covered by a very fine grid. The Sony BRAVIA S90 can be placed on the wall with a special bracket, though its curve does not allow “box effect” of the thinnest TVs. In fact, the Sony BRAVIA S90 is not fine at all. Its edge has a depth of 3 inches, but the back is convex, making it even thicker. It can also be placed on a desktop. The legs are included in the box and can be mounted at the ends or in the middle if our cabinet is smaller. They have a chrome finish and are very stable.
As mentioned, the model used for the test is 65 inches, the smaller of the two, although “small” is not a good adjective. The TV weighs about 42 kg, so it is necessary that we mount with help. The connections are distributed between the left side and the rear, so we can access them comfortably. It has a LED indicator on the bottom, just below the Sony logo, and two on the sides.
Image
65 inch, 4K, Triluminos technology, Engine 4K X-Reality Pro, 3D active and Motionflow XR. With these ingredients we knew what we would find. The Sony BRAVIA S90 offers outstanding image quality that, not surprisingly, is seen at its highest level when viewing content in 4K (3,840 x 2,160 pixel resolution). Plays bright colors and has good contrast, with deep blacks and bright whites. The frequency of 800 Hz Motionflow XR function and offer very smoothed movements even in the most frenetic action scenes.
The picture quality is excellent and its curved shape is calculated to provide a more natural and comfortable viewing visual experience. This is the theory, but in practice we have not noticed little difference curve with no TV. There is talk of immersive experience, but considering that the screen is 65 inches, the strange thing is that it was not. When we get on TV, the curve, which is quite subtle, not far barely seen . When we are located in a side we do see its curved shape, but the image is still seen almost like a flat screen TV-a definite plus since one of the fears of curved screens is poor vision at an angle.
The screen is active 3D mode and comes with two pairs of glasses included. They are quite comfortable, although do not expect to see very handsome or beautiful with them he seems that manufacturers strive to achieve the least flattering designs. It has a way of converting 2D to 3D with which we can enjoy the depth of this system. How could it be otherwise, the quality is really appreciated when we turn off all the lights. Note that the 3D mode allows playback 4K, so the quality is maximized, but if we use the converter is limited to 2K resolution.
Sound
The sound is the unfinished business of most TVs. The designs are becoming much flatter and this limits the sound equipment capacity, forcing us to buy a sound system if you want to enjoy a full experience. However, manufacturers are starting to pay more attention to sound and in this case Sony has been successful. The Sony BRAVIA S90 has six speakers of 10W each, which operate completely independently and are oriented in different directions. What you get with this provision is a 4.1 surround sound, and I must say that the result is excellent. The sound is clear, both in the high frequencies and the most serious, thanks to internal subwoofers. Not a Home Cinema, but the quality and power of sound are well above average.
Smart TV and functions
Sony offers a complete platform for Smart TV with their TVs. Comes with Sony Entertainment Network suite where we can rent movies, buy music or photo storage PlayMemories. We can also connect the TV to your local network to access music, movies or images we have stored on your computer. It has a panel of applications in which we can find content such as YouTube, 500px, WuakiTV, Rtve on demand and access to other TV channels. It also comes with Skype, to make video calls through its front camera.
We must emphasize the One-Flick command, a key to move through content quickly and conveniently. Have the (power, volume, program, start, rewind and options) just buttons and a touch pad on top, which allows us to move with gestures up and down or sideways. Another possibility is to operate your TV via mobile phone or tablet with the official app from Sony. Here we have a replica of the controls of normal control and the One-Flick command. It also includes a full keyboard and touch pointer, useful for finding content and not spend a good while typing. The One-Flick command leads NFC and can synchronize with a smartphone or tablet in one touch. Then we can play content via DLNA or duplicate the screen. In short, a complete platform that allows us a convenient and intuitive.
Connectivity
The Sony BRAVIA S90 allows us to play content from various sources. There you can connect a hard drive or USB stick and play media directly. If it’s a film, we can also paste the subtitles in the event that we want to see in the original. As mentioned earlier, the Sony BRAVIA S90 connects to our local network and allows us to access the contents of your computer through PlayMemories, Music Unlimited and Video Unlimited. It also has several ports and HDMI inputs common AV. It connects to the internet via Ethernet cable or WiFi. It also has NFC, WiFi Miracast, WiFi Direct and DLNA.
Reviews
The curve is the star feature of the Sony BRAVIA S90, but the reality is that it is a secondary aspect, almost an aesthetic detail. The picture quality, sound, handling with One-Flick control or full Smart TV platform is much more convincing arguments opt for this model. Sony has put the meat on the grill with this TV, investing in higher resolution (4K) and a very clear and powerful sound, certainly one of its highlights. We offer many options to watch TV play our own videos or download them. In short, a high-end TV that does not lack anything, if anything you can spare euros and the 65-inch model costs 4,000 euros.
