SideSwipe: a unique system of gesture control for mobile devices

SideSwipe system gesture control

Until recently, the electromagnetic radiation phones used exclusively for data transmission in cellular networks, but a series of “smart” covers Lunecase and a number of other projects have made it clear that even a weak wireless signal can be a source of energy for some devices. No less interesting is the new technology and contactless control of a smartphone developed by researchers at the University of Washington.

This system was called SideSwipe. To determine the direction of movement of the user’s hand, engineers monitored the changes in the GSM-signal received by the antenna of the mobile device. You do not need to include a front camera, process the information from the sensors and IR light radiation. And, most likely, another background program does not have a major impact on the battery life of your smartphone.

Accuracy non-contact control is still low, even with the antenna on a separate printed circuit board in tests of 14 different gestures SideSwipe shows the correct result only in 87% of cases. Probably, manufacturers might consider features of the technology in the design of mobile device still in the design phase, but the authors of the project had to work with your existing equipment.

SideSwipe allows switching tracks in the music player, even if the device is turned down screen. In the near future, the university is also planning to create a compact solution that can be easily integrated into a smart phone. It is possible that the shelves will support cases with the new technology of gesture control.
