Canon PowerShot SX520 HS review

Canon has introduced the Canon PowerShot SX520 HS, a new model for users looking mostly a versatile camera. This camera is compact, but its small size combined with a zoom lens 42 increases, says that soon. It also features a 16 megapixel BSI sensor; image processor advanced optical image stabilizer and video recording in FullHD. Canon includes a number of special features, such as support for frame mode with zoom or creative shooting. We tell you all about the Canon PowerShot SX520 HS.

 Lens and focus

The Canon PowerShot SX520 HS has a very versatile lens, allowing us to make group portraits from covering a wide angle to frame details that are far apart. The focal distance equals 24-1008 mm, a very broad range for a compact. Logically opening is variable, namely f/3.4 when we are in the widest focal and f/6.0 at the closest focal, ie when do butt zoom. The zoom results in 42 increases, but with the option ZoomPlus can be doubled to 84 increases.

One of the most interesting features of the Canon PowerShot SX520 HS is the function helps the car frame with zoom. What it does is automatically adjust the zoom to frame the subject in the photo. If it detects that one of the subjects will come out of the frame, it automatically resets. Lens consists of thirteen elements in ten groups and also has a optical stabilizer five-axis, a key element for crisp images and videos without tremors very violent.

As for the approach, the system is type TTL and has up to nine points of measurement with face detector included. We can also choose a single point in the center to select the part of the image we want to come out focused. Canon offers multiple focus modes including single mode, continuio approach, Servo AF, a way to track objects and of course manual focus.

 Sensor and image processor

The Canon PowerShot SX520 HS has a BSI CMOS sensor, which means BackSide Illumination or backlit. Such sensors have fewer layers and therefore more light reaches them, getting better results in low light environments. The sensor measures 1/2.3 inches and has 16 megapixels, a sufficiently comprehensive resolution to make very large pictures that we see on a larger screen or print.

Canon also includes a DIGIC 4 processor with ISAPS technology, which is responsible for processing the images quickly while minimizing the appearance of noise even at higher sensitivities. In this case, the camera achieves ISO 3200, which is not too high, but at least we know that the effect of noise will not be a problem.

 Functions and shooting modes

How could it be otherwise, the Canon PowerShot SX520 HS features a comprehensive package of functions and different scene modes to get the best pictures possible. In the photo section there is a smart way to select the best among 32 available scene modes, always depending on the situation in which we find ourselves taking pictures. There is also another interesting mode called Creative shot. What you do is apply one of the 46 available effects. This mode will store five additional files with various effects. It is also possible to shoot images in burst at a maximum frequency of 1.6 frames per second until the memory card is full. On the other hand there is a high-speed burst mode that goes up to 10 frames per second, but is limited to 117 shots and 4 megapixels of resolution.

The Canon PowerShot SX520 HS also record video and do it in high resolution FullHD 1080p at a rate of 30 frames per second. Also allows lower quality HD720p or even VGA, quality and size lose but win in space on the memory card.

Its dimensions are also quite tight and be comfortable to carry in your purse or backpack. The design of the camera is quite ergonomic, with a bulging area type handle for optimum grip. The camera is controlled through various dials and buttons, which are spread over the top and in the back, right next to the display.

Speaking of screens, camera in hand panel has a three-inch LCD, but does not touch, but we have to help us move through menus with the buttons. The screen has 461,000 pixels spread over its surface. At the top of the chamber is a integrated flash, but you can also insert an external Canon flash.

 Reviews

The Canon PowerShot SX520 HS is an interesting proposition for users looking for a compact camera that provides them the versatility for different situations. Its zoom lens 42 increases is definitely their strong point. His technical background is not the cutting edge, for sure, but it’s pretty balanced.
