Today there is much talk of 4K. This resolution allows a level of detail four times larger than a Full HD panel, and has become one of the most important claims for manufacturers of tele. However, this resolution is also already reaching other parts of the market. The Toshiba Satellite P50t is one of the first laptops that look this powerful resolution. This team with 15.6 inch touch screen integrates the Windows 8.1 operating system, an Intel Core i7-4710HQ quad core processor or a dedicated graphics card to improve performance in games and graphics processes. We had the chance to thoroughly test this equipment from the Japanese company, on the market for a price of 1,500 euros. We tell you our impressions.
Screen 4K
Without doubt, the great attraction of this laptop is its touch screen with 4K resolution. This resolution quadruples the Full HD content and stands at 3,840 x 2,160 pixels, resulting in a level of detail of 282 dpi. Although this specification calls (much) attention, here we have two problems. On the one hand, there are still few 4K content and most of the time the regular use of a portable set in situations in which this resolution is not needed. On the other, it is an effect not seen in either a 15.6-inch display such as a television of 50 or 60 inches. Of course, the contents in the native resolution if this is achieved we will have the impression of being a mirror to the real world. Perhaps more interesting (at least at this time) is the calibrated color and Technicolor Chroma Tune certificate, which ensures a more vivid and true to the original source colors. Moreover, this TFT panel has touch functionality, which will help us move through the menus of Windows 8 when we do not want to dip into the mouse.
A multimedia laptop
So, this is a much focused laptop for multimedia use, both in videos and movies and through games. Toshiba has built a dedicated graphics card AMD Radeon R9 M265X with 2 GB of dedicated memory that should serve quite fluently to run most modern games, which is located in an upper-middle range. In addition, we also have a Harman Kardon Sound powered by DTS. In our tests it seemed to us that these speakers offer a powerful sound good and acceptable, but in some cases gave us the impression that they did not reach the level of other high-end laptops for the Japanese firm. How could it be otherwise, enjoy a DVD / Blu-ray recorder, a good option to enjoy movies have been remastered at 4K (currently the Blu-ray will not play these files natively).
As for the power team, this team is reinforced with an Intel Core i7-4710HQ quad core processor and a power of 2.5 GHz. Thanks to Turbo Boost technology, this capacity can be up to 3.5 GHz in times when we need more speed. Moreover, Intel Hyper-Threading technology allows us to work as if we were actually eight physical cores (two processing threads per core). This chip is combined with a RAM of 16 GB to create a set of first level, capable of running most processes smoothly.
Storage and Connections
Too bad all this power is slightly overshadowed by the hard disk. And the Toshiba Satellite P50t committed to a 1TB hard drive with a speed of 5,400 revolutions per minute. This is a logical choice in a multimedia computer that is going to store many files, but after testing the speed and reliability of SSDs performance of this equipment when initiated or access drive is quite limited. It would have been desirable for Toshiba bet on a hybrid memory or even a combination of an SSD and a hard disk to improve this point.
As for connections, we have a pretty complete set. For example, this device supports WiFi AC protocol. This protocol operates in the bandwidth of 5 GHz exclusively, which improves both the stability and the speed of the network. However, to take advantage of it you must have a compatible router. Moreover, we can also connect wired through an Ethernet port. Other interesting connections are four USB 3.0 ports tenfold transfer rates of USB 2.0. One of them has a specific function so we can charge smartphones and tablets even when the computer is in sleep mode. The connections are completed with an HDMI capable of transmitting content in 4K and a card reader output.
Operating System and Applications
Inside the Toshiba Satellite P50t are the Windows 8.1 operating systems. This platform has failed to convince the public (in fact, Microsoft has already announced the launch of a new Windows 10) is designed to take advantage of both a traditional desktop environment and mouse as the touch capabilities of next-generation devices. Through the last update Windows 8.1 Update, you can enjoy a more convenient interface for use with mouse. For example, in any app we can see the taskbar at the bottom or minimize or close the window if you drag to the top. Toshiba also wanted to bring their own set of applications to improve the performance of this team. Among them we have a solution for seamless access to different equipment configurations manner, such as USB charging options, advanced boot options or the Internet. In addition, the Japanese company has deployed a system hard drive protection to prevent damage to our data when sudden movements or shocks occur. Other applications installed by default we are Google Drive to store our online archives, or Evernote to take notes and sync them across our entire device.
Design and Keyboard
In the field of design, Toshiba laptop has quite a classic but stylish silver aluminum. Some of the most distinguishing features are its design on the front in various heights (removing the keyboard and touchpad area above) and screen found in the side closest to the screen. However, we believe that this design can give the feeling of being too classic for a laptop that brings innovation of technologies such as 4K. The full dimensions of this model are placed in 37.7 x 24.4 x 2.8 inches and weighs 2.35 kilos totals. Where if you want to stop over on the keyboard . Many times this is an issue that we leave something aside in analyzes, but that could be key to analyzing our experience in front of a computer. And we must recognize that the way that has been deployed P50t keyboard is excellent. This keyboard has full high and well-spaced keys, and your click is smooth and fluid. If you often have to write long texts, this tool easily meets its mission.
Autonomy, prices and reviews
We are meant to be used before a home laptop, and it shows in their autonomy. According to official data from Toshiba, this team reaches a maximum of 3 hours and 10 minutes of use. In our tests, it has endured between an hour and a half to two hours of operation on average , a fairly humble figure it difficult for us to use away from home. The price of Toshiba Satellite P50t market amounts to 1,500 euros. In short, after having tried the Toshiba Satellite P50t Kira leaves a bittersweet feeling. It seems that the Japanese company has sacrificed too much to have a panel with 4K resolution, and that worsens the outcome. Clearly this team is able to run smoothly as a multimedia device, but in our opinion fails to offset the economic effort involved.
