Sharp today announced the first 7-inch tablet with MEMS-IGZO display, which will come on the market in early 2015. The technical data of the small tablets are irrelevant; it’s basically just the new display combine’s two technologies with the Sharp. In the first generation, the actual possibilities are not yet exhausted. Much more interesting will be how Sharp will continue to develop MEMS-IGZO displays. The idea is very good in any case.
Sharp has developed in cooperation with Qualcomm, a new MEMS-IGZO display, which is to consume very little energy, provides better representation in the open, and achieves a better light output and the display of content allowed in the off state – as with e-ink-displays. In the case of both companies combine the IGZO technology from Sharp, which so far only sporadically in some products is used, and the MEMS technology from Qualcomm. Qualcomm had already shown a SmartWatch and a 5.1 inch Quad-HD display with Mirasol technology, but did not bring itself to market this. The partnership with Sharp now has even spawned an entirely new MEMS-IGZO display that has the same number of positive properties.
Since the development of MEMS-IGZO display is just beginning, the first media display is so called Sharp tablet, initially only available in limited quantity on the market. This also has a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels, a Snapdragon 800 processor, Android 4.4 KitKat and LTE. It is also protected against splashing water. But in the future we will allow much higher resolutions and also rimless devices could build with this new display. With the Sharp Aquos Crystal, the company has already shown how such a smart looks.
The biggest advantage of a Sharp IGZO MEMS displays were really good outdoor readability, the extremely low energy demand and the presentation of content in the off state. Whether such displays but also really pay off , the other question remains. The Pixel Qi technology, which combines LCD and e-ink displays, has unfortunately never really borne fruit, it would have been today so a real selling point. We are excited to see what becomes of the MEMS-IGZO displays. Sharp and Qualcomm are always companies that could drive the development.
