HGST has introduced the world's first volume of 10 TB HDD filled with helium

Ultrastar He10

Less than a month since the announcement of Seagate’s hard drives of 8 TB, HGST, which is now a subsidiary of Western Digital, hastened to answer the announcement of the world’s first HDD, the volume of which is 10 TB. The range of new products was designated Ultrastar He10.

Unfortunately, specifications and terms of sales began, as did the price of drives, not yet reported. However, Western Digital assures that drives Ultrastar He10 not only provide the industry’s lowest cost of storing one terabyte of data on the HDD, but also the highest efficiency in terms of terabytes of data recorded.

In the new drives Ultrastar He10 used technology SMR (Shingled Magnetic Recording) and HelioSeal, who had already proved itself from the best side in the HDD HGST smaller volume. SMR technology allows increasing recording density by reducing the distance between the tracks of data while HelioSeal essence lies in the use of helium as the filler HDA. These two technologies have resulted in such a large volume of data storage.

According to the company, the model Ultrastar He10 of 10 TB is designed for use in a business environment – systems “cold storage” cloud storage services, archival services, etc.

Study samples drives Ultrastar He10 already available to partners HGST for testing and certification, but the date of the start of deliveries is not reported.

Simultaneously with the announcement Ultrastar He10 company HGST reported that model Ultrastar He8 of 8 and 6 respectively TB are undergoing qualification tests partners HGST (Netflix, Huawei, Inspur and Promise Technology), which indicates the imminent appearance of new products widely available.

The second generation drives HGST Ultrastar He8, filled with helium, made in the case form factor of 3.5 inches and is equipped with 128 MB of buffer memory. Devices vary the spindle speed of 7200 rev / min and consist of seven and five plates 664 and a recording density of 544 gigabits per square inch, respectively. Hard Drives HGST Ultrastar He8 will be released in two versions with interface SATA 3.0 and SAS. They are provided with a five year warranty, and claimed MTBF than 2 million hours. The cost of HDD, alas, not yet reported.
